Österreichs Wirtschaftsleistung sank laut WIFO-Schnellschätzung im II. Quartal 2023, nachdem sie zuvor seit Mitte 2022 stagniert
hatte.
We assess the role that nontradable goods play as a determinant of fiscal spending multipliers, making use of a two-sector
model. While fiscal multipliers increase with the share of nontradable goods, an inverted U-shaped relationship exists between
multiplier size and the import share. Employing an interacted panel VAR model for EU countries, we estimate the effect of
the share of nontradable goods on fiscal spending multipliers. Our empirical results provide strong evidence for the predictions
of the theoretical model. They imply that the drag of fiscal consolidations is on average smaller in countries with a low
share of nontradable goods.
Cross-demand creates links between goods which cause demand-driven cross-price dependencies. We construct a theoretical model
to analyze their role in propagating microeconomic price shocks to the CPI inflation rate and examine their empirical relevance
using spatial econometric techniques. The results highlight the importance of complementarity and substitution properties
between goods in exacerbating or mitigating price shocks. This contrasts with the propagation through the production network.
Most importantly, demand-driven cross-price dependencies determine the impact of producer prices on the CPI inflation rate.
After strong growth in the first half of 2022, the Austrian economy entered a phase of stagnation that will continue in 2023.
Manufacturing and closely related sectors are now in recession, while market-related services are expanding overall. This
dichotomy in the business cycle is not expected to abate until 2024. After +0.3 percent in 2023, WIFO expects GDP growth of
1.4 percent in 2024. The upward pressure on prices will only subside slowly.

Restrictive monetary policy dampens inflation effectively, but it also raises stress in financial markets. This happens through
revaluations of financial assets on banks' balance sheets and through dampened economic activity. Moreover, apart from the
positive effect of exiting negative interest rates, banks' net interest margin is generally negatively affected by interest
rate hikes. With most of the disinflationary impact of higher interest rates yet to materialise, monetary policy should allow
the financial sector to digest the rapid rate hikes of last year by reducing the pace of tightening.
Laut Statistik Austria stagnierte Österreichs Wirtschaftsleis-tung auch im I. Quartal 2023. Damit hielt die seit Mitte 2022
beobachtete Konjunkturschwäche an.
anhaltend schwache Entwicklung hin.
